The Beckley Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce started this fund in conjunction with their installation of a memorial to the miners who lost their lives in the Upper Big Branch mine disaster. The memorial was installed on the west lawn of the Raleigh County Court House. BRCCC also donated $2,900 towards the creation of the fund at BAF. As 29 miners died at UBB, the number holds special significance in building the endowment. Income generated by the fund will be used to maintain the memorial marker in perpetuity as well as underwrite education efforts dealing with mining in Raleigh County. Donations are still being sought to reach the $10,000 goal.
