Thank god we rescued twelve year old Barney three weeks ago from Chatham County Animal Services. He had one of the most severe cases of end stage periodontal disease we have ever seen and we scheduled him for a dental yesterday with Dr. Becker at Eastside Veterinary Hospital. The stench from his mouth was overwhelming and if you touched his face he cried in pain. During surgery it was discovered that his lower jaw was broken with the bones only being held together with muscle and skin. How did this happen? The periodontal disease rotted away a piece of the jaw causing it to be just floating in his face. Hence the cries of pain whenever touched. The good news is that Dr. Becker and Dr. Marlay were able to wire it back together, remove all of his teeth and his prognosis in healing is very good. The wires will remain in place for four to six weeks and he will have to go under anesthesia again for their removal. It makes our hears hurt to think how long this poor little boy has been in such excruciating pain. We thank God that we found him and are here to heal him. At this time we need your help in defraying unexpected costs for his lengthy surgery. Please give what you can and thank you once again for supporting our senior dog project.
