AYUDA 2026 Campo Amigo Program

I am honored to share that this summer, I will be volunteering with AYUDA in the Dominican Republic. AYUDA's mission holds vital significance for me, and it is of the utmost importance that we improve access to medical care in other countries. 

    I have been living with type 1 diabetes for over three years. Yet, the challenges I've dealt with, grappling with diabetes, are incomparable to the struggles of dealing with diabetes in the Dominican Republic. Learning more about the discrepancies in medical care between the United States and the Dominican Republic has opened my eyes to the privilege that I have as a diabetic with proper care. 

     Many people with diabetes living in the Dominican Republic do not have proper education on how to manage their diabetes, and do not have the tools to do so. This has led to an abundance of people with diabetes coming to AYUDA camps with hypoglycemia at dangerous levels. AYUDA and its partner organization, Apriendo A vivir, are working to fix this. 

     AYUDA endeavors to remain a grassroots, volunteer-based organization by asking its volunteers to cover a significant share of the costs to run AYUDA's programs, including sponsorship of local diabetes projects, through fundraising. Without the dedication of individual volunteers, AYUDA would not be able to implement its programs to support local diabetes communities.
