Goal

I’m thrilled to share that I have stepped into the role of Executive Director at American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad, Inc. (AYUDA)My journey with AYUDA began back in 2012, during what I thought would be a one-time volunteer program in Ecuador. I had no idea that experience would grow into a 14-year (and counting!) commitment and ultimately lead me to this role. Since being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2007, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to access life-changing care and resources. Knowing that these opportunities are not equitably available around the world is what continues to fuel my passion for AYUDA’s mission.

Over the years, AYUDA has shaped nearly every part of my life. I’ve worked alongside inspiring young leaders, healthcare professionals, and community partners from around the world. I gained skills that guided my career in social work and social policy. I even lived in the Dominican Republic for two and a half years and met my amazing husband through AYUDA! Most importantly, I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of young people to create meaningful, systemic change in global health.

AYUDA has taught me to:

• Honor the dignity and worth of every individual
• Embrace humility and cultural understanding when navigating disparities
• Believe in the leadership potential of youth to transform health systems

After serving as a volunteer, mentor, Program Leader, and eventually Director of Programs, stepping into the Executive Director role feels like coming full circle. I’m honored and deeply grateful for the trust placed in me, and I’m excited to continue working closely with our incredible partners, especially Aprendiendo A Vivir in the Dominican Republic, alongside dedicated volunteers and health professionals.

Together, we will continue to build and strengthen community-based diabetes initiatives, including diabetes camps, leadership trainings, parent support groups, and educational workshops that empower young people to live healthier, happier lives with diabetes. Thank you to everyone--friends, colleagues, mentors, family, and supporters--who has been part of this journey with me. Your encouragement means the world, and I’m excited for this next chapter with AYUDA.
