Goal
I am incredibly grateful to share that I am a volunteer with American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad (AYUDA), an organization that has deeply shaped my perspective on diabetes, access to care, and community. As a 22-year-old college student, AYUDA has given me the opportunity to turn my personal experience into meaningful action by supporting youth living with Type 1 Diabetes in the Dominican Republic.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes nearly three years ago, and from the very beginning, I was fortunate to receive exceptional medical care, access to advanced technology, and the education needed to manage my condition confidently. That level of support allowed me not only to adapt, but to live a healthy and full life. However, through my involvement with AYUDA, I have learned that this experience is far from universal. Many individuals living with diabetes around the world lack access to essential supplies, reliable care, and just as critically, the education needed to use available resources effectively.
This is where AYUDA’s mission is so powerful. AYUDA goes beyond providing supplies by empowering youth and families with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to manage diabetes independently. The organization works hand-in-hand with local communities in the Dominican Republic to deliver culturally appropriate, sustainable education programs that address real needs on the ground. The impact extends far beyond blood sugar management, it fosters confidence, resilience, and hope.
Being part of AYUDA has strengthened my passion for helping others living with diabetes and reminded me how transformative education can be. I am deeply thankful to work alongside such a dedicated team that is committed to creating long-term change. Your donation directly supports diabetes education programs and community-based initiatives that make this work possible. Together, we can help ensure that more individuals living with diabetes have the opportunity to lead healthy, empowered lives.
