Our journalists in Afghanistan are counting on you. 


Since the Taliban took power August 15, 2021, Afghan media have faced daunting political, economic, and social challenges. Hundreds of media outlets have closed and many journalists have fled the country (BBC). Of the journalists that remain, women have been especially impacted--more than 4 out of 5 have lost their jobs (RSF).

This collapse has led to a dramatic loss of news and information for Afghans and the world. Today divisions across ethnic, religious, linguistic, and economic lines are growing. Independent, fair, and diverse reporting is one of the most effective tools for reducing intolerance and misinformation. Without coverage reflecting Afghanistan's beautiful, complicated, and often problematic diversity, those beyond its borders have limited insight into what life is actually like.

Alive-in/Afghanistan was launched the day Afghanistan fell to the Taliban.

As news agencies scrambled to evacuate, our team came together to get news out of the country. Since 2021, we have published more than 280 stories in four languages from all of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces. Our work is important not only to the communities they cover but to Afghanistan and the rest of the world as we tell stories of local and global interest.  

Alive-in/Afghanistan is the only media agency in Afghanistan providing human-centered coverage of Afghan communities as told by journalists from those communities. Our human-centered approach to storytelling produces stories about Afghans, by Afghans. Our stories in Dari, Pashto, Uzbeki, and English have helped us build a global audience: in 2023 we had 3.6 million unique viewers and 28.8 million total views, with 90% of our audience based in Afghanistan.

This is the result of hard work by more than 40 freelance and full-time reporters, editors, and translators from across the country, a majority of Alive-in stories are produced by women who are the sole breadwinners for their families.
