AJH Teen Leadership
Angleton Junior High Teen Leadership
Ms. Beachum, the Teen Leadership teacher, travels to DC twice a year -- leaving her inspired, enlightened and with a deeper sense of excellence in our country displays through Art, Science, Government, and Law. She strongly believes if our students were to take this journey, they would rethink poor behavior by seeing how connected to this country’s history and our current way of life.
OVERVIEW
Project will comprise of three parts:
1) The monuments and museums will offer a tangible bridge between history in a book and history lived out. The students will get to see for themselves the many artifacts, memorials and places historians, science, literature and mathematics instructors teach.
2) Daily conversation set similar to the restorative circle for parents and students alike to discuss what we each saw, read, experienced. The hope is to generate conversation, inspire ideas and educate two generations at a time. The hope is to create a deeper value for education whereby students and parents buy into the educational experience. The residual outcome is reduced discipline and increased attendance.
3) Most students in the class have not traveled or have only traveled by car. The train and flight will offer a new experience for the parent and student. While in DC, bus, walking, subway and trains will be the primary means of transportation. This will offer students and a parent the opportunity to use alternative transportation to get around.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
The cost of this trip includes travel, food and lodging for four days -- placing it outside of funding availability. The trip’s primary function is to educate family units, increase healthy communication between parent and student, build positive relationships between participating families and educators while increasing positive relationships between district and the community it serves.
IMPACT
Students will be prepared and eligible to enter and graduate from any four-year university or technical school through an academically rigorous curriculum and program.
Students will be provided with opportunities to become thinkers and problem-solvers with real-world experiences while fostering their curiosity.
Students will develop and expand leadership and social skills to become community-minded citizens and leaders.
Our district has an increased level of impoverished families which creates a burden for our schools to become a surrogate parent. Restorative Practices helps give our educators, an appropriate balance to supporting a struggling family unit without creating division and conflict between the school and the family. Though this restorative practice is new to the district, we are getting positive results.
The lingering questions of how to educate seemingly uneducable students is a constant debate which ultimately ends with finger pointing to avoid legal responsibilities. Some students do not see school as fun or interesting. Most of their interests include breakfast or lunch, a sport or a way to hang out with their peers or a safe place to sleep. Students don’t find the true value of education, therefore, they rebel or become despondent.
