Adopt-an-Acre
Supporting Wildlife Conservation & Communities in Kenya
Adopt-An-Acre was set up in 2020 as a means of raising much needed funds during the Covid pandemic, when tourism was not possible. During this time, the local communities were not receiving an income from tourism and the leases of the conservancy land were still payable. Adopt-an-Acre was introduced, whereby contributors could adopt an acre of land in the conservancy for a year, so that the local communities would continue receiving the rents and the conservancies could continue to exist, even when tourist numbers are low.
The concept proved a successful way to directly protect the precious wildlife habitat that has been established by ensuring that the local community receives an income from setting aside their land to wildlife and Adopt-an-Acre continues today. It strives to prevent the collapse of community conservancies in times of crisis, due to local communities having to fall back on alternative income generation and land use which may harm the biodiversity of the wildlife conservancies.
Gamewatchers Safaris pays directly for leasing 42,500 acres of land in conservancies in Amboseli and the Mara Eco-systems in Kenya, providing an annual income of over US$1.5 million to the communities in rents and wages. This means that in a year, every acre of conservancy land supported by Gamewatchers is creating a protected habitat for wildlife and also an income straight to the local communities.
Through the “Adopt-an-Acre” plan, contributors can adopt an acre of land in a wildlife conservancy in Kenya for a year with a donation to the Wildlife Habitat Trust.
We have 42,500 acres to be adopted!
The adoption of acres to help support wildlife also makes a wonderful gift to a friend or relative! They will receive their own personalised Adoption Certificate.
As a special incentive, anyone adopting 30 acres or more will receive a credit from Gamewatchers Safaris for the same amount donated, to be used for payment of a stay at any of the Porini Camps. So a donation of US$1050 to adopt 30 acres will receive a travel credit worth US$1050 towards the cost of a safari taken this year or next staying at a Porini camp in any of the conservancies, while adopting 100 acres for US$3500 will receive a credit of US$3500.
