Goal
On the occasion of Eid Ul Fitr 2023, the El Ahmar sisters, Haya, Layaan, Nurai and Amani Lily, dedicate their Eid gifts towards the Sadaqah Jariyah of relieving the future hardship of families in need of close access to clean water today.
Dedicated to the communities of Kaberamaido and Kalaki in Uganda, together with the team at Surge for Water, we look forward to building a deep manual water well in to provide convenient, continuous access to safe water and sanitation.
We pray that Allah accepts this deed from the El Ahmar sisters and provides abundant safe water to the communities of Kaberamaido and Kalaki for years to come.
Water Issues in Okapel, Kaberamaido, Uganda
Okapel mosque is located in Okapel central village in Kaberamaido, Uganda. The mosque community is comprised of 300 people from 25 homes. The main water source in the Okapel Primary School well, located 1km away and shared with 2,600 people from the school and 5 villages.
This large demand leads to significant congestion and long lines resulting in missed prayer, school, household and work opportunities. Sometimes the lines are so long, the water users go to an open, contaminated water source that is over 3km away -- resulting in health issues.
Farida Shaban, a Muslim woman from Okapel mosque shared: “I find challenges of accessing safe water because the water source is congested, the only safe water is Okapel Primary School well which serves 1600 Pupils and 1030 community members including the school staff. This takes much of our time for domestic chores and also interferes with our prayer time. The opportunity to have a water source drilled at the mosque will help us fulfil our Islamic norms and practices and also improve our personal and home hygiene”
Kaberamaido in Eastern Uganda, home to over 100,000 people is often self-described as a "forgotten" land. Heavily contaminated lake water and unprotected springs are the main drinking water sources. Additionally, in this district 80% live below the poverty line, 11% are orphans and vulnerable children, and 7% are living as HIV positive. While over 70% of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihoods, hunger is pervasive.
Build a Well: 1000+ People in Okapel will have Safe Water
With your help, we will drill a deep well for Okapel to reduce the pressure at the Primary School. This well will be constructed as close to the mosque as possible (depending on where we find water) and will be shared with broader community.
With this new well, over 1,000 people will gain access to safe water close to home -- including 300 muslims.
This means over 1000 people will have chance at improved education, health, income and overall well-being. It also gives the muslim community a chance to practice their faith in accordance with the norms and with dignity.
