Goal
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Over 85% of disabled households live in extreme poverty, and none have access to clean water, toilets and sanitation. In Phalombe, cholera outbreaks are frequent, and children with disabilities are particularly vulnerable. Without proper sanitation, waste from the community can infect the land and water and increase the risk of spreading infection.
We plan to build 6 accessible compostable toilets after we have reached each funding goal, reaching 13 villages. This will solve the following problems for disabled households living in rural Phalombe:
👉 The area we work in has no toilets or safe running water, which means outbreaks of cholera and malaria. This affects disabled children more as they often have additional health needs. By having toilets, this will reduce the spread of deadly diseases.
👉 All the waste will be treated and used as fertiliser for a community vegetable patch, which will help feed 4,800 people and tackle food shortages in the area.
👉 We will be building a water tank, giving 4,800 households access to safe water 💧 and reducing the spread of disease.
👉 These toilets are fully accessible and have space for changing rooms for people with disabilities. Often, charities forget to make their toilets accessible, leaving people with disabilities without access to basic sanitation. This gives people with disabilities independence and access to toilets and water.
👉 Women and girls have somewhere safe to go to the toilet and change their sanitary products.
