50k for the Future Lake Stewards of Maine

We met this year's challenge!!!

Lake Stewards of Maine is celebrating our

50th Year Anniversary with a generous

Lake Stewards of Maine will receive up to $50,000 in matching grant funds if we reach our 50k fundraising goal by the end of this year through a generous matching challenge grant! AND the same opportunity has been offered for 2022! Please help us meet the challenge, and effectively double your support in doing so!!

Lake Stewards of Maine (LSM) is deeply grateful to the ~1200 certified* volunteer community scientists who donate thousands of hours of their time every year collecting water quality data and screening lakes for invasive aquatic species, in order to help us better understand, and protect Maine’s clear, clean lakes. Our primary goal as an organization is to promote and support widespread public participation in Maine’s lake communities in the gathering of scientifically credible information concerning the health of our lakes. LSM provides training, certification and long-term support to individuals through this process, in the form of comprehensive information, materials and tools necessary for them to conduct their valuable work - all at no cost to volunteers. LSM volunteers also play key roles in their communities, sharing their knowledge with others, and fostering lake stewardship.

As we look ahead to the next 50 years, we anticipate that the need for, and work of our volunteers will grow in numbers and breadth, as we work toward our ultimate goal of supporting trained volunteers on every lake throughout the state. The challenges that our lakes face, including the introduction and spread of aquatic invaders and the development of “harmful algae blooms” will likely increase as Maine lakes experience the negative influences of a warming climate.

We have recently received a “matching grant” from a generous supporter that will allow LSM to expand staff capacity to assist with the ongoing growth of the organization. A donation from you will be matched 100% through this challenge, thereby greatly enhancing our ability to face the challenges of the future!

* Other than the Maine DEP, Lake Stewards of Maine is the only organization that certifies water quality monitors and invasive aquatic species patrollers on Maine lakes. Certified means that an individual has attended a training that follows the Maine Lake Assessment, Quality Assurance Project Plan. This training protocol ensures that the lake data being collected by certified monitors is scientifically credible.
