The 30th year revamp
They say you can measure happiness by the amount of lives you impact. In the last 30 years, thousands of vervets found a new home at the Vervet Monkey Foundation and now have a second chance at life. We feel overjoyed and we couldn't have done this without you.
In 1989, an orphaned baby vervet, called Regus, was found alone. The authorities suggested to kill the monkey as they were regarded as vermin. We never considered this as an option and so after people hearing how one was saved, more orphans arrived and the Vervet Monkey Foundation (VMF) was born to create sanctuary and rehabilitation for them and to educate people about vervet monkeys. In 2005 the VMF managed to get them off the vermin list.
Thanks to you, we rescued, rehabilitated and integrated more than 40 orphaned babies last season, who sadly lost their mums and families (many of which were killed by humans). Every year we also receive dozens of monkeys: such as ex-pets been kept illegally, monkeys who have been shot, snared or hit by cars... and they all need a new home.
The stories behind the rescued orphans are horrific, leaving the babies traumatized and with no family. They need extra care and rehabilitation before introducing them to a monkey foster mom and a new troop. This is the case, for example, of Winona and Shaney, 2 orphans who were rescued this year after their entire troop were shot by a farmer when they were less than a week old. Shaney and Winona arrived at the VMF in shock and grief after living through such a horrible experience.
Shaney, rescued orphan, baby season 2022 We will always keep fighting to protect them, but with the passage of time, their Sanctuary homes need upgrading and this is where you can help.
After 30 years providing shelter to all these monkeys, the old enclosures need some refurbishing in order to improve the welfare, safety and living condition of all those animals under our care. Robert troop requires a complete renovation, Skunkey troop fencelines need to be changed from chickenwire to diamond mesh, lots of shelters, intro cages and cementing around the perimeters need maintenance to ensure the security of the enclosures. All these restorations mean an extra expense that VMF, as a Non Goverment Organization, NPO charity are hoping you may be able to help us.
Join us on our 30 year anniversary and kindly contribute to rebuilding their home: help us to give them the enclosures that they need, the life that they deserve: help us to revamp the VMF.
