2025-2026 Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition

Since 1984, the Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition has been held annually in February featuring three Virginia MATHCOUNTS Chapters (Fairfax, Northern Virginia and George Washington). Recent competitions have typically had 350 - 450 Mathletes from 35 - 50 schools, and is one of the largest Chapter Competitions in the nation. These Mathletes represent over half of those competing in Virginia and is a testament to the success of our regional competitions.

The 6th - 8th grade Mathletes participate in MATHCOUNTS and other math-related activities at their schools. This program is a success! Surveys have shown that 95% of participating students are satisfied with their experience, and 86% of MATHCOUNTS students went on to post-secondary education, with about 60% pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) studies--about three times the national average for all students. They are the next generation of doctors, scientists and engineers so critical to our nation’s future.

The competition is organized by a core team of approximately 12 volunteers, with about 100 additional volunteers assisting the day of the event. We welcome tax-deductible contributions from both corporations and individuals to help fund this competition. Significant costs include the rental of a large event space, incentives and awards for the Mathletes, as well as snacks for the Mathletes and volunteers.
