Help Bring Life-Saving Driver Training to North Carolina

Every day, families in North Carolina and Virginia send their loved ones out on the road hoping they’ll return home safely. But for too many, that hope is shattered.

Traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths are rising in North Carolina, with teen drivers at the greatest risk. Traditional driver education teaches rules of the road but it does not prepare drivers for the split-second emergencies that cause most serious crashes.

Teen Driving Solutions School (TDSS) is working to change that.

A Proven Solution—Delivered Directly to Communities

TDSS is launching an innovative new program: mobile Virtual Reality driving simulators that bring advanced, crash-prevention training directly to communities across North Carolina.

These mobile units will allow us to train more than 5,000 teen drivers every year, giving teens, parents, and adults the chance to practice critical skills before they face real danger on the road.

Our goal is ambitious, but achievable:
Reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities by 15% within three years.

Why Simulator Training Saves Lives

Simulators are trusted by industries where mistakes cost lives:

• Commercial truck drivers

• Heavy equipment operators

In fact, simulators were once common in American driver education. When funding disappeared decades ago, so did one of the most effective tools for preventing crashes.

Today’s simulators are far more advanced: immersive, data-driven, and proven to work.

With simulator training, drivers can safely experience:

• Loss of vehicle control

• Emergency braking situations

• Skid recovery

• Hazard avoidance

• Poor weather and visibility conditions

All without real-world risk.

Why This Training Matters So Much

Every crash involves three things:

• The vehicle

• The driver

Only one of those can think, react, and make life-saving decisions.

If a driver has never experienced a skid, sudden obstacle, or emergency situation, they won’t know how to respond or how their vehicle will react to their response should an evasive maneuver be required. Simulator training allows instructors to create those moments again and again until safe responses become instinct.
