HFFC Social Action 2025 Thanksgiving Campaign

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, during November HFFC collects donations to support a non-profit organization or cause. This year, in conjunction with the American Humanist Association and chapters across the country, the Steering Committee of HFFC has selected food insecurity as the need we’d most like our members and friends to address.

The U.S. legislature’s July 2025 bill made large reductions to SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program), previously called “food stamps.” As an article in the Stamford Advocate (October 17, 2025) explained, “under new rules requiring work, 36,000 CT residents may lose their SNAP benefits. The list could include veterans, people who are experiencing homelessness, residents without jobs, parents of older children and late middle-age adults.”  Others who will lose SNAP benefits for which they previously qualified include lawful permanent residents, refugees, victims of human trafficking, and Afghan and Iraqi nationals with special immigrant visas who worked with the U.S government. (Reminder: Individuals without legal immigration status have been and are still ineligible for SNAP benefits under federal law.)

The Thanksgiving campaign runs through the month of November. We will send the collected donations to The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County (foodbanklfc.org).
