In 1890, the newly married Elizabeth MacDonell ended her teaching career and began her philanthropic work in the Lima community. A world traveler, she saw examples of museums everywhere and desired to create a cultural and historical institution in her hometown. The founding of the Allen County Museum and Historical Society was only the beginning of her long association with the organization.
Upon her death in 1942, the Allen County Museum and Historical Society stated that it “has never counted among its membership anyone who gave more freely of time, effort and money to advancement of its purpose. Actuated by sincere, deep-seated and heartfelt love for the works of this Society in creating an institution for the preservation of the historical lore of Allen County and in establishing a cultural center for the advancement of learning in this community, Mrs. MacDonell gave to this society a great measure of her boundless energy and unswerving devotion.”
Since its inception in 1908, the Allen County Museum has been impacting the community through the preservation and promotion of our cultural heritage. Since 1980, the museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and continues to be the only county museum in Ohio to have this status. Our accreditation ensures that we operate at the highest standards in all our endeavors.
In the past year, we have seen an 8% increase in attendance, in large part due to our changing exhibits, lectures, and educational programs. As the only history museum within 60 miles, we continue to provide a cultural destination for our community. We enjoy seeing our visitors engage with their history—whether it is adults experiencing the museum on their own, families enjoying the Children’s Discovery Center, or students visiting with their schools.
Please help the Allen County Museum continue Elizabeth MacDonell’s desire for a cultural center for the advancement of learning. Through your year-end donation, we can provide enriching cultural experiences while remaining free to everyone.
Most sincerely,
Jim Osmon, President, Board of Trustees
