Lake Stewards of Maine's efforts to...
In the coming years, Lake Stewards of Maine (LSM) will focus on building upon our existing, successful volunteer citizen lake science programs by increasing the number of lakes being monitored throughout the state of Maine. There are over 6,000 lakes and ponds in Maine and every lake is unique! The most effective and efficient way to monitor lake health is to train volunteers in the collection of critical lake data that provides information to help measure a lake's water quality over time. With the rise in invasive aquatic species infestations, it is also imperative that lakes are surveyed for invasive species as prevention and early detection are the key to reducing significant damage or spreading to other waterbodies. Early detection provides the best hope of eradication. Training volunteers on how to identify native aquatic plants and to recognize "suspicious" plants and animals that could be invasive helps to minimize the impacts of this increasing threat to Maine lakes.
In order to accomplish LSM's expansion goals, additional staff will be required to assist with recruiting more volunteers, conducting more workshops, providing technical support, and managing the increase in lake data. Currently, LSM volunteers monitor ~500 of the 6000 lakes and ponds throughout the state. We have a ways to go to reach our goal of having monitors on every lake in Maine!
Contributions to this campaign supports volunteers like Bob who has been monitoring for over 45 years!
We are grateful for the support of the roughly 1200 LSM certified citizen lake scientists who volunteer thousands of hours of their time each year collecting data. They help us reach our mission of supporting widespread public participation while gathering scientifically credible data concerning Maine lakes. Over 480 of the 1200 volunteers have been monitoring lakes for more than 10 years! Our volunteers are increasingly crucial in protecting our lakes in the midst of encroaching climate change, which threatens to increase lake temperature, change water chemistry, and spread aquatic invasive species. A threat to our lakes means a threat to our culture, economy, and environment. Backed by our volunteers and your support, Lake Steward of Maine is working to protect Maine lakes and our way of life.
