2021 Exchange Choreography Festival
At The Bell House, we believe that dance is an action, not a product. A movement of connection, an effort of communion and an impetus of community, in which creativity comes out of and seeds back into everyday life. Our living selves are continuous with our creating selves, and it's to investigate and celebrate that union that EXCHANGE Choreography Festival exists. We believe that dance should further people and relationships between people -- that movement is generative, not definitive.
Since its beginnings in 2009, EXCHANGE has been unique among dance festivals in the US in its emphasis on the human dimension in the art of choreography. In recent years, EXCHANGE has convened to take class together, attend world-class performances of the Summer Heat International Dance Festival, and to present the work of professional choreographers from all over the country in informal showings and open their process in roundtable dialogue with peers and audience alike.
This kind of dialogue among artists and viewers is rare -- particularly in this region, where development and networking opportunities for dancemakers are few and far between, as are chances for viewers to experience an intimate experience of the newest modern dance.
The Bell House planted this seed twelve years ago. We need your support to help it grow -- and with it, the life-enhancing, body-renewing, hope-restoring gifts that dance can bring both IN and TO our communities. Your donation will go toward professional development and the creation of new local, regional and national dance works!
EXCHANGE Choreography Festival didn’t stop last year. We went virtual with great success. For 2021, we will once again be virtual but focus (for the first time) exclusively on Dance for Camera workshops and screenings. EXCHANGE will be held July 29-31, 2021 and feature 3 of the top International practitioners and educators in the field of Dance for Camera: Katrina McPherson, Karen Pearlman & Richard James Allen.
The art of dance making for the camera creates a bridge between visual and performance arts; they redefine the idea of “moving-pictures” and construct a new stage for dance. Participants will range from local to international artists as they come together to learn this hybrid dance form in workshops offered from planning and shooting to embodying performance for the camera and editing rhythms.
This is your chance to support this project.
We need your help!
