2021 Winter Fundraiser for unhoused people in Reno

The number of deaths from exposure has increased year over year for people living outside in the cold. We use 100% of these funds to intervene in emergency situations.

@RenoPatCarter Brings $44,000 to RISE to Help the Unsheltered Out of the Cold

[Reno, NV] - Yesterday, Pat Carter pledged to match up to $20,000 in donations to get people out of the cold during this extended and deadly storm. Within 24 hours, the community met that goal and continues to donate.

We are staging at Deer Park while coordinating with the City of Sparks, the Sparks Police Department, and our Washoe County Health and Human Service Partners to gather donations and help people locate a warm bed. With shelters full or near capacity in the region, we are finding motels, apartments, and other units where people can stay and begin healing from isolation and prevent severe frostbite.

The Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality (RISE) partnered with Washoe County Human Services Agency (WCHSA) to open a new model of emergency shelter for our community this year called Our Place. Our Place served over 900 of the most vulnerable people in Washoe County last year and has over 500 active clients. The Our Place model demonstrates how government and community members can bring their strengths and resources together to create a healing, safe environment. The sustained rollout now has 38 bedrooms for families and over 100 guest quarters for women. In addition, over 60 women on the waiting list are in temporary housing.
