Goal
At The Bell House, we believe that dance is an action, not a product. A movement of connection, not an object of elite consumption. An effort of communion and community, in which creativity comes out of and seeds back into everyday life. Our living selves are continuous with our creating selves, and it's to investigate and celebrate that union that EXCHANGE Choreography Festival exists. We believe that dance should further people and relationships between people -- that movement is generative, not definitive.
Since its beginnings in 2009, EXCHANGE has been unique among dance festivals in the US in its emphasis on the human dimension of the art of choreography. In recent years, EXCHANGE has convened to take class together, attend world-class performances of the Summer Heat International Dance Festival, and to present the work of professional choreographers from all over the country in informal showings and open their process in roundtable dialogue with peers and audience alike.
This kind of dialogue among artists and viewers is rare -- particularly in this region, where development and networking opportunities for dancemakers are few and far between, as are chances for viewers to experience an intimate experience of the newest modern dance.
The Bell House planted this seed eleven years ago. We need your support to help it grow -- and with it, the life-enhancing, body-renewing, hope-restoring gifts that dance can bring both IN and TO our communities. Your donation will go toward professional development and the creation of new local, regional and national dance works!
Even in the midst of a very challenging year, the festival has pivoted to an online platform in order to stay connected in the art making ways that make us human even as we are distant. The festival will continue to give emerging and professional dancers the opportunity to showcase their choreographic works and engage in discussion about the process of making those works with the dance community online, including workshops, networking events, dialogue and performance.
