Land is Life COVID-19 Response
Land is Life supports Indigenous communities during the Covid-19 pandemic
Since our founding, Land Is Life has been committed to strengthening Indigenous communities, which are on the frontlines of protection against threats to their safety, security and rights. This moment is no different. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, we are working with our partners around the world to keep Indigenous communities safe and healthy. We are extremely concerned about what will come in the weeks ahead but remain inspired by the vigilance and determination of Indigenous communities and organizations in responding to the pandemic.
Across Latin America, Asia and Africa, Indigenous peoples are not only exposed to the spread of the virus within their territories, but are suffering from shortages of food and medicine, lack of information in their traditional languages and an absence of government support in addressing the crisis. Furthermore, governments and private interests are seizing on the opportunities provided by lockdown conditions to further encroach on the lands and territories of Indigenous peoples, targeting Indigenous human rights defenders, and committing human rights violations against Indigenous people practicing traditional livelihood activities. In response and in coordination with our partners, Land is Life has mobilized to support the urgent needs of our network, such as delivering supplies, supporting awareness campaigns in traditional languages, and advocating for the fundamental basic rights of Indigenous peoples, especially the right to health.
I continue to be inspired by the communities we are working with and am sharing below some examples of how our partners are persevering during these uncertain and challenging times. While we all confront the challenges of Covid-19 together and in our own ways, we encourage you to donate to Land is Life. 100% of donations will go to support indigenous communities during the Covid-19 crisis.
In Solidarity,
Casey Box
