Maiya School: Empower girls and women in Bangladesh

Together, let's raise $45,000 to support two full classes of girls' education for one year! That's 80 Rohingya refugee girls getting a quality education.

All donations over AU$2 to Maiya School are tax deductible.

Maiya School creates opportunities for girls and women affected by displacement to improve their lives through education and training.

The Australian-registered charity was founded to improve access to education for refugee girls around the world, starting in the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh.

Maiya School is currently implementing education and livelihoods projects in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

Rohingya girls’ education

In the world’s largest refugee camp – Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh – Rohingya adolescent girls are excluded from school as there are no culturally appropriate options available to them.

Maiya School opened its first girls-only school in Kutupalong camp in April 2022 to meet this need. Now, 80 Rohingya girls receive a culturally appropriate, gender-transformative, inclusive education at our learning centre!

We believe that education will not only change the lives of our students, but of their families and wider Rohingya community – by bringing up a generation of girls who are educated, empowered, and motivated to advocate for their rights and future.

Maiya School is now aspiring to open a second school in the refugee camp, so we can reach more of the 92,000 Rohingya adolescent girls that lack access to quality education.

Bangladeshi women’s livelihoods

The Rohingya refugee crisis has also profoundly affected the Bangladeshi community living in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. Host community women, in particular, lack employment and empowerment opportunities.

Maiya School empowers local women by equipping them with valuable skills and knowledge that can enhance their self-reliance. We’ve partnered with two local women’s associations to train their members in agricultural, food preparation, and sewing skills. We also provide resources so women can grow their own food and generate income to support themselves and their families.
