Antifascist activist banned from Holocaust memorial for wearing a Kufiya. The ELSC is fighting back.

On 6 April 2025, Anna M. was expelled from Buchenwald concentration camp memorial - a site built to remember the victims of fascism - for wearing a Kufiya.

The Buchenwald memorial foundation banned her, threatened her with criminal charges, and then doubled down by banning her from returning in August 2025.

When forced to justify the ban in court, the foundation argued the Kufiya "has been associated with anti-Jewish and anti-Western positions since the time of the National Socialist dictatorship." The Weimar Administrative Court and the Thuringian Higher Administrative Court both upheld the ban.

The ELSC is now pursuing a formal declaration of unlawfulness on Anna's behalf - and we will not be deterred.
